Job Description
The North Carolina Retail Merchants Association (NCRMA) seeks to hire an Assistant Director of Government Relations to play an active role in NCRMA’s public policy agenda and mission. The ideal candidate will have first-hand knowledge of the legislative process, possess the ability to grasp a variety of legislative and regulatory issues, and be able to effectively convey these issues through oral and written communication to elected officials and NCRMA members.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to: 
• Active participation with NCRMA’s public policy issues at the NC General Assembly, Executive Branch, Administrative Departments and Licensing Boards. NCRMA has a very large and diverse legislative agenda.
• Written communication for NCRMA members, including a weekly legislative report each Friday during the legislative session.
• Written communication on behalf of NCRMA for legislative and regulatory bodies.
• Managing all Emergency Management issues and being the primary liaison between NCRMA and the NC Department of Public Safety on these matters (serve as NCRMA's representative on NC State Emergency Response Team (NC SERT); staff the NC Emergency Operations Center upon full activation; maintains the Emergency Management distribution list; and responsible for immediate notification of States of Emergency, Disaster or associated Executive Orders to NCRMA membership).
• Limited travel.
• In addition to Government Relations duties, the assistant director will work with NCRMA and its 12 affiliated companies on other membership events and Association activities.

NCRMA is a non-profit trade association that was organized in 1902 to improve the business climate for retail merchants in North Carolina. Now, over 100 years later, NCRMA continues to be the voice of the retail industry in North Carolina. NCRMA serves both large and small retailers from multi-state chains to local Independent Store Operations; members represent all types of businesses including antique, apparel, art, automotive, book, carpet, department, drug, electronics, floral, furniture, grocery, hardware, jewelry, paint and variety stores. The Association represents the interests of individual merchants before the members of the General Assembly and serves as a vital link to state government.

Desired Skills & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree
• Minimum two years relevant experience (working with the NC General Assembly and/or State Departments and Agencies)
• Knowledge of the legislative process 
• Strong interpersonal and both verbal and written communication skills
