Walk West is looking for an experienced and highly engaged individual to work with the Vice President of Government Affairs on legislative strategy and campaigns for our lobbying clients, ensuring their interests are well-represented before political, governmental, and regulatory interests in North Carolina. The Director of Government Affairs should be a highly motivated and organized self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively with internal and external teams. The ability to prioritize, multitask, and work under pressure while maintaining professionalism, integrity, and a positive attitude is of utmost importance. Additionally, we’re looking for a thought leader who will demonstrate leadership in lobbying and advocacy campaigns, understanding the convergence of traditional and emerging advocacy techniques to educate and engage constituents and decision-makers as well as emerging public policy discussions. This person will be expected to work with other teams at Walk West to provide integrated strategic considerations and management of full-service advocacy campaigns alongside colleagues. Internal leadership abilities are also expected in supporting a growing government and public affairs practice and team.

The Director of Government Affairs will be expected to:

  • Work closely with clients ensuring their needs are met and opportunities identified
  • Provide exceptional client service Develop and execute strategic lobbying and advocacy campaigns
  • Cultivate close relationships with legislative, political, and governmental leaders, staff, and influencers
  • Write briefs, fact sheets, reports, and other collateral needed for effective education of decision-makers and for client communications
  • Consistent engagement before the North Carolina General Assembly during the legislative session and interim, reporting activity, anticipating opportunities and threats, working with third party advocates, keeping the clients engaged, and other activities as needed to effectively advocate on behalf of our clients
  • Political and policy research, assessment, and reporting
  • Review and analyze public policy, including legislation and rules
  • Coordinate lobby days for clients

Required Experience, Education, and Traits include:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years political, government, or public affairs experience Independent judgement and organizational skills
  • Excellent writing and public speaking abilities
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high energy, sometimes high-stress settings
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships
  • Strong verbal and written presentation/communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and shift gears
  • Strong attention to detail and timelines
  • Demonstrated ability to ask questions, gather information and make suggestions based on findings
  • Ability to work extended hours during legislative session, as needed
