Job Description | Director of Government Affairs

The North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ) is seeking a Director of Government Affairs to manage its legislative, legal affairs and grassroots program. NCAJ is a nonpartisan association of trial lawyers and legal professionals with a community of over 2,300 members dedicated to protecting people, preventing injustice and promoting fairness. The Director of Government Affairs is an integral member of the NCAJ team and reports to the Executive Director.

The primary role of this full-time position will be to manage the legislative advocacy program and the NCAJ political action committee (NCAJ PAC). This position will advocate on behalf of NCAJ before the North Carolina General Assembly. In that capacity, this person will monitor legislative, political and regulatory developments and work with internal team members and partner organizations to identify, evaluate and address issues of importance to NCAJ. The position will also be responsible for overseeing the administration of an active amicus and moot court program in the appellate courts as well as managing the organization’s grassroots efforts.

The ideal candidate must be team-oriented, have a keen attention to detail, possess the ability to inform, educate, influence and work well under pressure. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are essential as this person will need to represent NCAJ before various legislative committees and other external organizations. A self-starter with the ability to take initiative, manage deadlines, and multi-task in a dynamic and fast-paced environment is also required.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of professional experience in advocacy, lobbying, political development or government relations. Experience working on political campaigns or as a legislative staffer is a plus. A law degree is preferred.

Compensation Salary for this full-time position is commensurate with experience and competitive in the non-profit sector. Benefits package:

The board establishes the policy framework to guide NCAJ staff, volunteer activities and programming necessary to support NCAJ’s core mission of empowering a strong community of trial lawyers.
